Hi Doctor. I am a 23 year old Asian woman who have been smoking cigarettes since teenager. I had tried quitting few years ago but my body became extremely ill including fatigue, hard to breath and mouth ulcers. Is there any way to quit cigarettes slowly without nicotine patch? Thanks
Nicotine is main constituent of tobacco and it is highly addictive substance. There are many ways to quit tobacco. One is gradually decreasing the doses of smoke over a period of time. Alternately nicotine patches are used to replenish the deficient doses of tobacco. If you don't want nicotine patches then you can gradually decreasing the doses and to reduce craving consult a Psychiatrist. Medicines like Bupropion, Varenicline etc are used to decrease anxiety associated with tobacco withdrawal and to reduce craving.
