Suggest Treatment Or Diet Plan To Reduce Steroid Myopathy

Is there any new treatments or diets to combat steroid myopathy? My husband was diagnosed with Temporal Arteritis July 9 2014 by Retina Specialist and was put on 60 mg of prednisone per day for several months, then on 55 for a month, 50, 40, 30, 20, 17.5, 15 mgs He now has steroid myothopaty, needs a walker to get from bed to toilet or bed to his living room chair, or to the dining room. Very weak, feels as though the TA is coming back. Has seen a Neuro-ophthalmologist and has appt. with Neuro-Rheumatologist this coming week. He has been living on Ensure and very small meals for several months. Has lost about 40 lbs.(no appetite), but will eat if I just put a plate in front of him.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
dear madam

firstly what were his symptoms to start with, temporal arteritis usually presents as pain on the temporal that is on the side of the scalp above the ears and about 50
50% of them do have visual symptoms as blurring of vision and in some cases sudden loss of vision in one eye which is on the side. high dosage steroids are the most recommended treatment but some times once initial remission takes place we can put them on other immuno suppressants like cyclosporine, methotrexate etc, why was that possibility not explored in your husband's case?
steroid induced myopathy as of now other than rehabilitation and physical therapy has no medication worth a mention, many alternatives including vit E have been tried but with not much benefit.
if you have any further clarification to seek I would be happy to be of assistance
