Suggest Treatment For Umbilical Hernia

My male friend has had a Hernia on his belly button for all of his adult life, he is 59. I assume it s an Umbilical Hernia. This week it has swollen to 4x the normal size and he is in pain. He hasn t allowed me to take him to Urgent Care or the Hospital, mainly because he has no insurance. What is your advice and what could go wrong if he doesn t get it examined?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your male friend of 59 having a swelling in umbilical region that has grown X 4 times and there is pain.
This is surely is indicative of an Umbilical or Para-umbilical hernia.
Enlargement of the lump with pain is indicative of obstruction or even strangulation.
This is an urgent problem.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Take him to the ER to confirm the cause and to see if it has turned into any complication.
If obstructed then reduction may help.
If strangulation then an urgent surgery will be required.
Till then stop anything orally.
Try to reduce the hernia with tolerable pain. If not possible do not press more.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
