Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was diagnosed with having trigeminal neuralgia. Medications, so far, have not helped and the symptoms seem to be worsening. I am considering trying cannabis since it is now legal to use in Georgia. However, it is not easy to find in the state. How do I go about finding a doctor or treatment clinic that may assist
Trigeminal neuralgia causes debilitating pain on any one side of face and can be caused due to a number of causes like large artery impinging over the nerve causing damage of the Myelin Sheath [ a protective cover over the nerve] leading to severe electric shock like pain..
Other causes are disorders like Multiple sclerosis, tumour compressing the nerve, physical trauma etc..
Anti-epileptic drugs like Carbamazipine and other drugs are helpful in reducing pain to some extent.. Cannabis or Cannabinoids are seen to help in reducing pain related to trigeminal neuralgia and you need to consult a Neurophysician and get evaluated and appropriate treatment can be done..
Surgical procedures like microvascular decompression, balloon compression, gama knife radiosurgery etc can be options depending on the cause..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
