Hi. Thank you for writing to HCM.
What you are describing is very characteristic of a condition known as LPRD or
Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. It presents with repeated throat clearing, bouts of
dry cough and feeling of something constantly irritating or being stuck in the throat. This is because of tiny amounts of
acid reflux leading to
injury around the voice box region.
This has nothing to do with the regular acid reflux and it is not necessary for you to have symptoms of
gastritis or other symptoms associated with acidity.
Unfortunately LPRD requires lifestyle changes such as avoiding stressful lifestyle, cessation of
smoking and alcohol, reduction in tea/coffee consumption and avoiding to lie down immediately after meals (for at least 2 hours). It is also advised that you avoid consumption of spicy meals as well. Use of medicines such as antacids are only supportive and temporary. These reduce symptoms by 30-40% only. For complete recovery lifestyle changes as mentioned above needs to be applied for at least 12-18 weeks to see significant results. Oral antacids are recommended for 8 - 10 weeks.
Lack of compliance to such regimen often leads to an uncured status for many years. Expecting cure just from medications in this condition is a little farfetched.
Hope this information was helpful. Do let me know if you have any other concerns.
