Suggest Treatment For Swollen Face When Suffering From Pericoronitis

Hello I have pericoronitis, my face is swollen on one side and I am in so much pain that I can barely sleep! my ear and throat are also quite painful. I went to my dentist on Saturday and she gave me 2 antibiotics to take; I finished one today and I will finish the other tomorrow but Im still in a great deal of pain! Is it normal for pericoronitis to last this long even after two courses of antibiotics??

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Pericoronitis occurs when there is inflammation of the gum flap that surrounds the wisdom tooth.
It occurs due to infection in the gum flap cased due to accumulation of food debris between the gum flap and the wisdom tooth.
When the infection is severe it can take a few days to resolve..
Swelling on face is also a common sign in case of Pericoronitis..

I would therefore suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon and get examined, an x ray of the wisdom tooth is also required to be done..
Firstly conservative treatment will be done that is cleaning the area with antiseptic solution and hydrogen peroxide..
It will be followed by another course of antibiotics like Augmentin, anti-inflammatory pain relievers like Advil or Aleve along with Serratiopeptidases..
Do cool compresses over the cheek and do warm saline gargles..
Gargle with antiseptic mouthwash solution..

In case if it still does not improve then either removal of the gum flap by Operculectomy procedure or Extraction of wisdom tooth can help in permanent resolution..

Hope you get well soon..

Regards..
