Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Foot And Ankle

My son, 42 years old, is an alcoholic. Has been for many years. Within the last few months he s developed a protruding stomach, feet and ankles that swell, shortness of breath, a fever that just comes and goes yet never in any type of order. I am very worried about him. Can you give me your opinion as to what might be wrong? I already know the alcohol consumption plays a big part.

Dear patient
If your son is chronic alcoholic then possibility of liver damage with cirrhosis is highly likely considering symptoms you described. Alcohol intake directly damages liver cells which are responsible for protein synthesis in human body. So damage to lever cells leads to decreased protein synthesis and low protein level in blood. Low protein leads to Generalized oedema including ascites is abdomen and swelling of both feet. I would advise ultrasound of abdomen to assess status of liver. Get blood checked for protein levels. Stop alcohol now and for life. Take tab liv 52 twice a day for 1 month. Visit expert physician with reports. All the best.
