Suggest Treatment For Swallowing Difficulty

My husband has experienced difficulty in swallowing - he says that it feels like he has swallowed a sweet and can feel it all the way down. this also occurs when he is just drinking. He has just returned from a 3 week stay in hospital (broken hip) and says that he has had this problem for about a week. Thanks

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

Difficulty in swallowing is most commonly related to throat infection or sore throat. This problem is common after a bacterial or viral infection of throat. Patient may feel pain & difficulty in swallowing & no pain otherwise. There may be a feeling of something cought or blocked in throat. He could do the following treatment.
1.Saltwater gargle- gargling several times a day with warm salt water can reduce swelling in the throat and loosen mucus, helping to flush out irritants or bacteria.Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in one cup of water. Just remember to spit the water out after gargling, rather than swallowing.
2. Sucking on a cough drop or even a sugar candy could be helpful. This increase the saliva production & thereby keeping the throat moist.
3. You could also take anti-inflammatory medicines like acetaminophen/ibuprofen , if not taking them by prescription. They would be helpful by reducing pain & swelling.

Consult a ENT specialist if problem persist.
