Suggest Treatment For Strep Throat, Nausea, Chills And Loss Of Appetite

My 22 year old has been ill for a couple weeks. Nausea, chills, fever, loss of appetite. Negative strep throat, negative mono, some leukocytes in urine. Put her on Bactrim and some anti nausea pills that dissolve on the tongue. Couple days later we were in ER because she was having difficulty breathing and pain in the chest. Negative mono, no bacteria in urine (but she was on Bactrim), negative chest X-ray, and negative EKG. Thought it might have been a side effect of Bactrim, so switched her to Keflex. So a week later her fever and chills are gone, but the nausea is still present. She seems to have sensitivity to noise and isn t eating much (mostly because of the nausea). Had her take another anti nausea pill and now she s able to eat. Says she also feels a little anxious. Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Anxiety may contribute to nausea and vomiting. Especially in her case, because she already has improved from the rest of the symptoms, it seems the infection is gone.
I would advise to keep her busy with something during the day, so she does not stay too much alone. If she does activities such as some sports or walking in green parks, visiting people she loves being with or playing instruments, it would be a good way to positively affect her mood. Avoiding coffee, energy drinks, smoking and alcohol is important as well.

If she is not improving in 2 weeks she will need to be seen by a doctor to determine the need for medications for anxiety.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
