Suggest Treatment For Soreness And Knot At The Site Of Injection On Arm

My 7 year old daughter had blood drawn today by an inexperienced nurse . . it seemed to me as if she had to wiggle the needle to get it into the vein and then the blood started coming into the tubes, I also noticed that while she had the band on her arm her hand started turning blue and the tech said that it was normal to do that. After about 6 hours she has a bruise and a small knot at the site where the blood was drawn and she says it is sore. What do I need to do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sometimes, during the process of withdrawal of blood, some blood may leak out of vein and collects in the subcutaneous tissue under the skin, it may cause a hematoma under the skin and may present as knot or soreness.

Usually, if the hematoma is small, it subsides itself after some time. However, if it is hurting or feeling painful, then applying ice pack for 20 minutes 2-3 times a day may give relief from soreness & swelling. For symptomatic relief of pain, OTC analgesic / anti-inflammatory drug like Tylenol or Ibuprofen may be used.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
