I am diabetic and have restless leg and arm syndrom that keep me awake for nights. Dr. gave me Ropinirole hcl .5 mg does nothing. It starts while laying on the couch prior going to bed. I m awake many nights. My previous doctr gave me ambien I took that whenever I went 2-3 nights without sleeping. I am 97, but never had a problem with ambien. I am taking buspar now that helps some, but I wake up 3:00 and light headed have trouble going back to sleep. What do doctors want u to do. Don t they know it could cause heart attacts not getting any sleep. In the meantime my blood pressure went higher. What can I do to help sleep and get rid of restless leg syndrome?
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.
Since Ropinirole (which is a first choice medication for restless legs) doesn't seem to be working other alternatives can be tried. One possibility would be Clonazepam (Rivotril) which is used in RLS and also should help with sleep. Another possibility would be pregabalin or gabapentin which are also used in RLS but have also some sleep promoting properties. So you should discuss with your doctor about having a prescription for one of these drugs.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
