Is Horizant Effective In The Treatment Of Restless Leg Syndrome?

My sister-in-law has restless leg syndrome. She is currently suffering from multiple myeloma, and she is on Requip (1 mg twice a day) and Respirodole (sp?) (1 mg twice a day) for her restless leg syndrome. Nothing seems to be helping her. She also takes Xanax. We heard about Horizant 600. Do you think this could be an option for her?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your sister-in-law.
Yes, it is quite effective in the treatment of Restless leg syndrome.
The standard treatment of restless leg syndrome involves the use of medications like Mirapex ( (Pramipexole), Neupro (Rotigotine) and Requip (Ropinirole). Beside a benzodiazepine like Xanax (alprazolam is also prescribed to help with sleep.

Horizant (Gabapentin) is an anticonvulsant drug prescribed for the treatment of moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome if the other medications described earlier did not show improvement.
Hence, Horizant may be considered to treat such refractory cases of Restless Legs Syndrome.
Best wishes.
