Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, My husband had back surgery in October and was prescribed oxycodone for the pain. He was taking it for 3 months and is now having a terrible time with withdraw effects. He twitches all the time and is unable to sleep. Are you able to recommend ways to help with getting the meds out of his system?
I understand your worries. However, i must inform you that it is not advisable to stop oxycodone abruptly. Your husband's doctor would taper the dose gradually in appropriate intervals till his body can do without it.
However, there are drugs which could help limit the withdrawal symptoms and reduce craving for oxycodone. These include buprenorphine and naltexone. These drugs are not found over-the-counter and are best prescribed by your husband's doctor.
I implore you to take your husband to his doctor. He may be referred to an opioid detox center where the drugs would be well prescribed and the symptoms well monitored.
I hope i have answered your question.
Best wishes
