General & Family Physician 's  Response
A course of antibiotics (like cephalosporins or other broad spectrum antibiotics) up to 10-14 days is often the most effective form of treatment for this type of infection, and most women will feel relief within 48 hours. However, it is important to finish all medication as prescribed to make sure the infection does not recur.

If you have an abscess due to a severe infection, it may need to be incised and drained. So go according to your severity of infection.

Here are some advice which you must follow.
1) Apply a warm, wet washcloth to the infected area for 15 minutes, four times a day.
2) Anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, may help relieve pain.
3) Careful nipple care to prevent irritation and cracking.
