Suggest Treatment For Severely Altered Taste While Treating Bell S Palsy

I have been suffering with Bell s palsy for almost 9 months. I am 80% recovered according to my neurologist. My taste buds have been affected. Everything I eat and drink tastes salty, sour, bitter, burnt and peppery. It is not enjoyable to eat or even drink water. I have noticed the bitter and pepper taste has gotten worse. Does this change mean my buds are waking up? Thank you .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

To recover from altered taste the cause should be treated. Bell's palsy patients should be treated with anti-virals and Prednisone. As the recovery takes, the altered taste should also come back. Sometimes it may take a little longer time. Take care of your oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and using a medicated mouthwash daily. Quit smoking, alcohol, tobacco or addictions if any.

Smell and taste are related. Anosmia may occur due to inflammation in the nose. It can be corrected with the help of antihistamines or vaporizers. Chew food slowly and eat different food so that you can take the taste. Avoid hot beverage or food. Eat only when you feel hungry. Take lemon juice with honey in a cup of water to tantalize your taste. Be gentle, do not be in haste, taste sometimes takes time to get restored.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
