Suggest Treatment For Severe Sore Throat And Pus Sores On The Tonsils

My son called me from college this morning with a severe sore throat, he says he has large white pus sores on his tonsils. He went to immediate care - strep test was negative. They told him to drink salt water and rest. I'm concerned it may be tonsilities. He had these same symptoms about a month ago. He also has a history of allergies and says he always feels like phlegm in his throat. Is it time to get his tonsils removed?

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain white pustules on Tonsils along with sore throat seems to be probably due to a severe case of bacterial throat infection leading to Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis..
White pustules are pus pockets that further confirms towards bacterial infection..
For confirmation consult an Otolaryngologist or an ENT expert and get evaluated..
He can do investigations like Throat swab culture can help in diagnosis..
You can be advised:
-Antibiotics like Augmentin OR Azithromycin to resolve the infection..
-Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relive pain. -----Doing warm saline gargles,
steam inhalation and using a humidifier in your room can be very much relieving.
-You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat..
-Gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine..
-Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water..
-Chew Vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..

Hope this information helps..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe sore throat and pus sores on the tonsils which are pointing towards a condition known as granular pharyngitis along with tonsilloliths.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to start with warm saline gargles and betadine gargles 3-4 times a day. Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances , do warm saline rinses and carbonated beverages. Take steam inhalation along with vaporizers. Consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like strep throat and viral infection . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics such as Amoxicillin 500 mg depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestants and anti inflammatory. If symptoms keep on persisting you can go for tonsilectomy under expert medical supervision. For pain and swelling you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
