Suggest Treatment For Severe Muscle Cramps While On Methotrexate

I am having cramping pain in my calf muscles when I walk long distances. I have recently been diagnosed with Rhumatoid Authritus. I am on a medication called Methotraxate or something like that but it does not take away the pain in my calf muscles. I take a suppliment called Folic Acid with the medication but still I have the pain and it also appears to get aggravated when I am severly stressed out which I have been for several weeks.

Hi,

Methotrexate is an immune suppressant drug and not a pain killer and its prescribed as rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. You should take painkillers like Acetaminophen or Tramadol to relieve the pain. RA can affect your muscles, tendons and ligaments. In addition to inflammation, they can be affected by you moving your body differently to protect your joints and thereby putting a different kind of stress on your muscles.

It can be treated with key, massage and gentle stretching along with magnesium supplements which helps in preventing the cramps.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohd Awais Ilyas
