Suggest Treatment For Severe Jaw Pain

I had oral surgery 10 days ago on the right bottom back molar. There was considerable trauma associated with the root removal, resulting in a large hole that has been filled with cadaver powder and other material to prep the area for a possible future implant. Plus, the jaw muscle has been very sore from the middle of my tongue to my right ear, causing discomfort when i lay on my right side and eat. I have followed the surgeon's directions for after care, and still have considerable pain at the end of the day, presumably from use, talking and eating. I wake in the middle of the night with jaw pain and suspect that is resultant from my sleeping on my right side and causing pressure to the area. I am trying to not take pain pills as they make me feel woozy and I know they are habit forming. I am a 69 year old woman in good general health and have good oral health habits and healty gums. How long should I expect this pain to continue. Will the hole ever fill up with tissue?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain as you had a traumatic oral surgery to remove he lower molar tooth that has been filled with a bone graft for further preparation of the dental implant , then the pain can be probably due to initial inflamed tissues in that area that must be healing gradually and as it is just ten days it is normal to have recurring episodes of pain..

As you are not taking painkillers pain is normal symptom..

I would suggest you to take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen when there is pain..
You should also do cool compresses on the right side of face..
Do warm saline gargles..
Take a soft diet..

In case if the pain does not improve in next 3 to 4 days consult your treating dentist and get evaluated so that he can check for causes like infection and nerve trauma that can cause pain.

Hope this helps..

Thanks and regards..
