Suggest Treatment For Severe Headaches, Sore Eyes And Diarrhea

At this point, what should I do? I am 62, male, disabled, living alone. I have been ill since May of this year, my symptoms beginning as insidiously vague, few, selective as such, building to a manifested crescendo, now attenuating but still present. I am certain, although not tested, that I ve been infected with West Nile Virus; this, based on particular symptoms that ve developed and are most common in combination when the infection is West Nile, including resulting encephalitis. Symptoms began early May. I was mosquito bit alot and for several days on end while in the process of sewing a small stand of Catnip for my two cats. They are both fully caught up on all their required vaccinations. Symptoms were: severe headache, swollen, sore eyes, eventually so sensitive to light I remained indoors with no lights on inside my home besides my television. Lymph nodes in my neck became so swollen that at one point I had dubbed myself Billy the Bullfrog. I also had slight node swelling under my arms. Right side of jaw ached for weeks, back of throat on same side intrinsically sore while swallowing. Eyes were continuously reddened, (still are) swollen to the point of being half closed. Incredible weakness, tiredness. For TWO MONTHS I slept appx. 22 hours per day. Slight diarrhea, much abdominal cramping. I ve been on Norco, Morphine since 2006, so I consider the persistent diarrhea unusual. Was continuously feverish, drenched in sweat 24/7, especially when resting, which was all the time. At this point I have 3-4 fever onslaughts per day and they are much milder. My head hurt SO terribly, I thought it was going to explode. There were weeks I prayed for relief, or death, didn t much matter which. I found a bottle of naproxen sodium and iced my entire head continuously for weeks. Headaches are (mostly) gone. Very dizzy when I walk (or hobble). On June 1st, I noticed a rash across my entire upper body, including my shoulders, back, forehead and abdominal region. Not much itching, swelling of rash continued until very uncomfortable across forehead, shoulders and upper back. Rash still present, only on abdominal region. I made two DR. S appts and had to cancel both due to being too ill to drive. At that time, my two step-daughters offered there services in order to drive me to E.R. or DR. yet at that time I was too sick to ride. I believe I am on the road to recovery....but AM I? What should I do? Can lab work help? I can give blood, anything except a spinal tap. I ve read where symptoms can continue on an off for months, years. I am left drained, dizzy, still slightly feverish and my back and limbs ache on and off.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the symptoms narrated with severe headache, diarrhea, weakness following multiple mosquito bites indicate secondary encephalitis most likely. In my clinic, after thorough clinical examination with neurological details, I recommend evaluation with:
- Complete hemogram
- ESR
- CRP
- Antibodies of particular types
- Serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen
- urine microscopy
- MRI brain
- spinal tap (but as you are not willing for the same, kept at last)

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
