Suggest Treatment For Severe Episodes Of Ulcerative Colitis

I am Cheryl (age 67) I have had uc for 50 years. I have had moderate to severe episodes of uc since 1996 without remission. My rheumatologist has ordered Humira for uc but I am fearful of side effects. I can deal with what I have now (uc) going every 15 min to deficate during severe attacks and going 6 to 10 times daily when not severe. I am afraid of getting cancer, liver & kidney damanage etc. Please advise me. I have a laundry list of illness just having systemic lupus. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, there are various treatment options for the management of severe episodes of ulcerative colitis as:
- 5 Aminosalicylates as Olsalamine, Mesalamine, Balsalazide, Sulfasalazine
- Anti metabolites as Azathioprine, Mercaptopurine
- Immuno modulators as Tofacitinib, Adalimumab (Humira)

When your doctor has prescribed you Humira, kindly start considering its pros and cons with your consultant. Ultimately all or any of the above medications will provoke stage of remission in ulcerative colitis condition. The only cure is SURGERY with total colectomy. Kindly discuss last option as well during your next planned scheduled visit to your treating gastroenterologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
