Suggest Treatment For Severe Ear Pain

My grandson, age 4 about 40 lbs is having severe ear pain to where he wakes up screaming and tears. He has a fever of 100.7 taken axillary. I have given him Benadryl to help with any drainage he has going on and children s Tylenol. I also have rice in a sock that we warm up and place on his ear. This seems to help. Anything else I should be watching for.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tylenol is good as an antipyretic to take low the temperature. Does the child have pain and cries more if you get a little pressure over the tragus of the ear (that is the eminent small part near the cheek)? Your child may suffer from otitis and can need antibiotics, but to rule it out better visit an otorhinolaryngologist for children.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Emilda Belortaja
