Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea While On Carvedilol

My doctor recently changed my Lisinopril-HCTZ to Carvedilol. About a year ago I was diagnosed with IPF and put on a drug called OFEV. I have had diaherra with the OFEV but it seems to have gotten worse since I changed to Carvedilol. Could this new med cause this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, the new medicine, carvedilol, may cause diarrhea as a side effect. Diarrhea is also the common side effect of OFEV (Nintedanib drug).

You may try to decrease the severity of diarrhea by avoiding spicy foods, fried and oily foods, milk products and beverages that contain caffeine and alcohol.

But, if diarrhea is severe (you may experience dizziness or fever) and you feel dehydrated, then contact your doctor.

You may be prescribed a medicine Loperamide to stop diarrhea or decrease the dose of the medicine that you are taking or change it (either carvedilol or OFEV) to a different one.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Malik Amonov
