Suggest Treatment For Severe Coughing With Thick Phlegm

My wife is 57 years old and at least a pack a day cigarette smoker. She has terrible coughing spells in the morning after she's gotten out of bed and many times during the night as well. She will not go to the doctor. She is also bout 100 pounds overweight if that makes a difference and has smoked for over 30 years. She coughs up flem which is dark, but not bloody. What would you suggest I do? I'm the cough is due to all of her smoking.

prolonged cough may indeed be due to chronic smoking. based on her smoking history i suspect there might be other complications as well. if i were your treating doctor i would suggest an xray and sputem examination to rule out cancer and close in on the diagnosis.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
