Suggest Treatment For Severe And Persistent Headaches

Hello Doctor, My father is 65 years old now.He has been suffering from severe and 24 hours continuous headache. Is there any cure for it? He is a diabetic. He has B.P,thyroid, acidity problems also.3months back he has undergone a knee replacement operation for both knees and it is successful. After the operation he has got pains in his legs.Arthopedic surgeon told my dad those pain is normal in early days of operation for diabetic patients. But those pains became so severe and agressive. He is feeling stabbing pains, tingling sensation and burning sensation in his legs and hands. Angiogram reports shows that he has blood clots.A cardio vascular surgeon Dr.Abhachandra fromSVIMS,tirupati refered him to a vascular surgeon P.C.Gupta,care hospitals,Hyderabad,India. He said it may be due to diabetic nuropathi. He said there is no life threat to my dad.He wrote some medicines and suggested walking. My dad is walking regularly for 2 k.m. in the morning. Pains in the leg are reduced. But sometimes he is getting pain again and again. My dad is feeling tingling sensation in hands and legs even before. But they got worsened now. Can you suggest any cure for his headache and pain in leg.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the headache condition has to be evaluated in ileu of previous history of high BP, headache if any. If there is previous history of high BP, migraine or other disordres causing headache, then particular guidelines of:
- Blood pressure control
- Symptomatic therapy

If there was no previous history of headache before surgery, then strong suspicion of post spinal anesthesia headache comes as the first diagnosis. This issue is critical and needs consultation with expert anesthesiologist to cure it.

The pain in legs and upper limbs with tingling indicate usual concern with flare up of neuropathy and has to be entertained with
- Vigilant control of diabetes
- Regular walking
- Assisted physiotherapy
- Supportive medications of methylcobalamine, pregabaline, zinc, copper, magnesium, multi vitamins

Avoidance of smoking and control of body weight are very major concern in this issue.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
