Pediatrician 's  Response
Most of the cold in children is caused due to certain viruses including rhinovirus. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics and resolve on their own in 5-10 days. The treatment is supportive. Rather than benadryl, I would suggest giving the child some antiallergic syrup like levocetirizine. Also give him steam inhalation. Water in the form of vapour will reach deep into the lungs and help in diluting the cough and give him relief. Paracetamol can be given for fever if present alongside. You can wait for a few days and see.
