Suggest Treatment For Restlessness, Memory Loss And Sleeplessness In Elderly
Hi
My Father aged 87 has been prescribed Prothiaden-25 and Alprax-.25mg
From the past 10 days he has become very restless, does not sleep well
has memory loss cries on remembering my Mother who passed away in December
The first day he took the new medicines , he slept well but was very confused on waking and
had slurred speech. we have not given it to him after that
He has high blood sugar and is on insulin
He has hyper tension and is taking medication
He experiences occasional blackouts for a few seconds
We wanted advise as to whether he could be given Alprax and Prothiaden?

Welcome HCM. Sorry for what he is going on.
He is suffering from Dementia and depression.
He needs more support from the family to fight the depression as he lost his wife recently. Alprazolam even though short acting some times can cause confusion and hence please avoid that.
For insomnia try natural products like melatonin. Keep him active and engaged during the day time so that he will have restful night.
For depression, please try more cleaner medication like Escitalopram. Prothiade has more side effects.
for dementia, once again he needs support. visual ques will help him. constant reminders will help him.
