Hi,
Brief answer: Your nephew needs to be evaluated for the cause of
jaundice. Detailed answer: Jaundice is caused by too much
bilirubin, which is breakdown product of
hemoglobin (the protein that carries
oxygen in the blood).
In newborns jaundice if very common because baby livers are immature and cannot process bilirubin too well. Jaundice that shows up late, after 1 week of life, is not normal.
There are many causes of jaundice to consider including problems with bilirubin
metabolism in the liver, infection of the liver, blockage to the flow of bile from the liver to the gut, and abnormal destruction of red blood cells.
Your nephew will need to be evaluated for these causes so that appropriate treatment can be given. Some tests include blood tests,
ultrasound of the liver, and a possible procedure to take a sample of the liver tissue.
I understand that the uncertainty of your nephew's situation can be distressing for him and the family.
Unfortunately, I cannot provide a time frame on the diagnosis. What testing will be needed and how long it will take to find the cause and establish a diagnosis varies from patient to patient.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Shapiro
