Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
In March of this year, I was diagosed with plantar fascitiis. Stayed off my feet until end of June..then began training a bit for a 1/2 marathon. Seems that on the long runs beginning around 8 miles -11 miles, my calf cramps extremely bad...immobilizing my leg and my ability to run - it s not dehydration (drinking 100 ounces a day or more), could this be due to the plantar fascitiis...seems to occur primarily in the leg of the heel with the problem.
Plantar fasciitis is a separate condition and not associated with cramps in legs. We need to work on them separately. First for plantar fasciitis, you must start doing the specific exercises and physiotherapy cycles. Simple anti-inflammatory medications will also help. Then coming on to cramps, it can be due to dehydration which leads to electrolyte imbalance, also in marathon runners, if there is deficiency of vitamin D, that can also lead to pain. Hence, I would suggest you to get clinical evaluation and investigations from an orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Sushil Vijay, Orthopedic Surgeon
