Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough, Tingling Lips And Chest Pain In A Child
My 10 year old son has had a cough for over 3 weeks now. He has gone to the doc, received a Celestone shot, been put on all kinds of allergy meds. He had the flu shot a week ago. After that the coughing worsened. All this weekend he has coughed and the cough sounds worse. Now he is saying that his lower lip is tingling, feeling like needles sticking him in it. I gave him some Delsym cough syrup but it hasn t helped much. I plan to take him back to the doctor tomorrow. What do you think the problem is? He says he feels ok other than the coughing and new development of lip tingling and chest pain when coughing. I took his temp and it was 98.5.
If your son is suffering from persistent coughing with mild chest pain which is not relieved by usual cough syrup then it could be related to acute bronchitis or severe upper respiratory infection.
Upper liptingling could be related to upper respiratory infection but there is no need to worry as it would also subside with coughing.
He would require,
1) antibiotics (quinolones or macrolides or cephalosporins) with
2) Antihistamine cough syrup needs to be continued as per your doctor's advise.
3) nebulization and steam inhalation.
4) he should avoid cold water and ice-cream,
The current medications (cough syrup) which you are giving is good but he must also be given antibiotics to subside infection.
This all above might have to be given for at least 7 to 10 days to resolve the symptoms.
Consult your physician for further advise.
