Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough In A 63 Year Old

I am a 63 year old woman in excellent health. However, since August, i have had a persistent cough. It is sporadic.....some flem but not always. It feels like a tickle, and I have to cough to relieve it. My husband is worried (cancer) but it is not all dry. Just bothersome! I suppose I should see my doc, but I don t have shortness of breath.... I swim over a mile daily. It doesn t hurt either.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
I understand your concern
Your symptoms could be due to viral or allergic bronchitis.
If it is not associated with fever, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest congestion then nothing to worry and take following advises:
- Tablet benzoate
-Take Cough syrup containing guaifenesin and dextromethorphan (Q tussin CF): 10 ml three times a day
-Drink plenty of lukewarm water
-Steam inhalation 3-4 times a day
-Strepsil throat lozenges (neem and honey flavor):take every 3 hourly
-Avoid cold beverages and exposure to pollutants

If the cough persists despite using the above medication then further workup would be required by consulting the pulmonologist.
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
