Hi,

Can you mention what was the exact mechanism of wound? Also a picture would be more helpful to assess the situation. Usually what happens is, following trauma, some amount of blood gets collects under the nail (subungual hematoma). This usually cause pain for initial few days only, and change colour from red-blue-black and then gradually disappears. If pain returns now, there is a chance that it has developed secondary infection that may lead to a subungual abscess.

In this case, it will need a course of antibiotics + analgesics for 5-7 days and your doctor will guide you. If no signs of infection, it will respond to analgesic alone- tab ibuprofen three time daily after food for 3-5 days. Keep the finger elevated and avoid prolonged hanging.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
