Suggest Treatment For Low Heart Rate, Anxiety Attacks And Palpitations Due To Use Of Marijuana

Hi, I m a 21 year old male. Since September (6months) I ve been an avid smoker of marijuana. I found myself smoking at all times of the day and spending around an ounce a week, I find myself smoking when I woke, before and sometimes during work and then heavily at night. This happened for months and I was fine, however, after smoking for several hours with my friends I d go home and smoke a big joint on my own and then sleep. During this period (6 months) I found myself rarely eating and smoking heavily... I almost substituted the weed for food and found myself eating once a day at best. My weight drastically dropped and I ve lost around a stone and a half. Just over 10 stone (I m around 6 1). About a week ago I was smoking normally and after work I came back and smoked for a few hours with my friend. As usual, I barely ate... Once I got to my room, I smoked another long joint by myself in bed and found my heart rate was very low. This began to worry me as I felt around 50 (bpm) and then I started to panick and found myself struggling for breath, shaking, sweating and losing vision (I felt as if I was about to pass out as everything went white). I went to the hospital the next day and they checked my blood pressure, sugar levels and heart rate and I was told it was just above 60 which is considered okay. They also told me that the subsequent reaction to the lowering heart rate was anxiety attacks. I haven t smoked since but I often feel my heart rate is low around 50 (unless I m active). Before September, I was a regular at the gym (everyday - sometimes twice a day) and I did both weights and cardio - however, I still smoked everyday. Is this a cause for concern? Or are the doctors right in saying its anxiety rather than heart problems? I don t often feel any palpitations but sometimes I feel a strain in my chest but it s easily corrected through controlled breathing which leads me to believe its anxiety. Will continuous smoking endanger me? I m planning on waiting a few weeks, correcting my eating pattern and increasing my weight (whilst introducing daily cardio at the gym). However, I m going to build up my cardio slowly, as I don t want to go from one extreme to the other. Will regular eating (and a balanced diet) allow me to smoke daily? Or will this further affect my heart rate? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You seems heavily addicted to Marijuana. You should lower the amount of weed you smoke. Your body is struggling to keep up with the amount you smoke, that’s the reason for your troubles. Maybe you had gone through a bad trip or panic attack.

Try to reduce the amount of weed you smoke. Smoking a lot causes both physical and psychological issues of which one is anhedonia - which means you may feel pleasurable things not pleasurable now. This leads to non-motivation.

If you find it difficult to handle it by yourself, try consulting a psychiatrist for help. Anything in excess is dangerous. You are still young. Your age suggests it’s high time for you to have a healthy productive lifestyle.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
