Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I think I have laryngitis because it is hard to breathe but not because of my lungs or throat - definitely the larynx. However, I can t even speak. I am coming off from having the flu for which I took Tamiflu for. I am feeling much better but would really like to know how to reduce the swelling in my larynx so I can speak again and breathe better. Are there any medications for this to help it heal faster or a protocol to follow? Thank you for your time! Sincerely, Shaylene Ps. I have been taking ibuprofen to reduce inflammation in hopes to breathe better. Thank you again
Hello! I have been through your question. According your concern you should know that laryngitis is an inflammation of your voice box (your vocal cords become inflamed) and may be acute or chronic (long lasting). Most cases of laryngitis are triggered by a temporary viral infection as in your case and symptoms last less than a couple of weeks. So, what I suggest for the moment is that you can manage acute laringitis with self-care steps, such as resting your voice and drinking plenty of fluids, inhale steam from hot water, use some lozenges, gargling with salt water or chewing a piece of gum, but don't use antibiotic. If your laryngitis symptoms last more than two weeks and if you have trouble breathing, cough up blood, have again fever, increasing pain and trouble swallowing you should meet an ENT specialist to do a physical examination and to exclude a bacterial complication or underlying disease. I hope my answer help you. I wish you a quick recovery.
