Suggest Treatment For Keloid Around Injury In The Middle Of Chest

I had a calcium deposit removed from my chest a little over a month ago. My doctor scraped it all out and stapled the scar. Staples were taken out a week later. Healing was going great, as I was also adding vitamin D lotion to the scar daily. All of a sudden it puffed out and turned into a nasty keloid. Hurts to touch sometimes. Looks very unattractive since its right in the middle of my chest so it s very noticeable. Any suggestions?? My mother is a physician s assistant and read that plastic surgery will make the keloid come back worse. I ll do any type of treatment as long as it ll go down or not look as red and swollen.

Hi.
I can understand your concern.
It seems to me you have developed a hypertrophic keloid in the middle of your chest.

Keloids can be very resistant to treatment and can recur even several years after the treatment. Treatment options can involve any of the following (and also involve combinations of the therapies listed below).

1. Steroid treatment - this usually requires multiple treatments. If the keloid is large enough this can leave excess skin after successful treatment. Steroid treatment can cause tissue atrophy & hypopigmentation.

2. Excision - Excising the keloid with a meticulous closure can effectively treat even keloids that have recurred.
3. Radiation - For extremely resistant or disfiguring keloids radiation therapy can be an effective mechanism to reduce recurrency rates in combination with surgical excision.

4) Silicone sheeting & Pressure: After excision, application of silicone sheeting and pressure earrings has been shown to be superior to excision alone at decreasing recurrence.

I advise you to consult a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon for proper care and the selection of the best procedure that is ideally required for you.
Hope the suggestions given above could be useful in getting the treatment.
