Suggest Treatment For Itchiness By The Stitches After Surgery

Hi, I had surgery on my knee 4 days ago, I now have 3 cuts all with stiches in, which are covered by dressing plasters... They are very itchy and feel tight, I know that s normal in the healing process, but I was wondering if there is anyway to reduce the itch as it is uncomfortable and distracting also. I am not getting my stiches out for a further 5 days. I hope you can help.

Hello,

I can understand your concern for itchiness by the stitches after surgery. It is due to inflammation at the stitch site and mild swelling after the surgery. In most of the patients it is self resolving condition and gets better by itself.

If at all the condition is not getting better by itself then I prefer to give an antihistamine such as cetrizine or levocetrizine or loratadine for two times a day for few days.

If at all you feel pain over the same or any throbbing sensation then must report to your treating doctor as it may be sign of infection. DO take your antibiotic coverage properly and regularly as suggested by your doctor.
I hope this information will relax you.

All the best.
