Suggest Treatment For Irregular Periods

Hi, my name is Brittany. I am seeking a second opinion in regards to my reproductive system. I am 23 years old and I did not start my menstrual cycle until the age of 17. Ever since then, they have been extremely irregular and I can go 7 or 8 months without having one. Right now, I am going on 8 months without having a cycle. I went to the nurse practitioner in my town and they ran blood tests and did an internal and external ultrasound and everything checked out fine, but from what she said, my follicles in my ovaries were all immature and the lining of my uterus was extremely thin and showing no signs of having a cycle or ovulating. She said that although my test results were "inconclusive", she thinks I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I have researched this extensively and I strongly disagree because I do not have any of the symptoms that go along with that. She wanted to put me on a medication for diabetes patients and I just can't do that when I strongly believe she has misdiagnosed me. I am looking for a second opinion.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
You are having irregular period , amenorrhea ( no bleeding ) age 23 years .
Your nurse practitioner diagnose it as pcos ( poly cystic ovarian syndrome).
Actually she advised you medicine for pcos and the medicine ( metformin perhaps ) for diabetes and pcos are same , so need not to concern.
Since you are in dilemma , so get in another ultrasound from another center .
Also get in blood examination for FSH/LH (ratio) , estrogen , androgen levels .
Actually irregular menstrual cycles , amenorrhea , dysfunctional uterine bleeding are the common symptoms in pcos cases .
Since she also diagnosed as thinning of uterus wall so consultation with a gynecologist is important .
Acne , hirsutism , obesity are the other symptoms for pcos cases.
So in my opinion don't desperate , rather consult a gynecologist and get his opinion .
