Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has familial insomnia and we are having an extremely hard time finding anything that will help him in getting his sleep. The lastest suggestion given by his ARNP was dissolvable melatonin, the problem being that my husband is taking blood thinners and high blood pressure meds. Is it ok for him to take the melatonin?
After going through your query I understand your concern.
I would like to tell you that generally anti-hypertensive drugs don't have any drug interactions with melatonin except Beta Blockers. Melatonin decreases the toxicity of Beta blockers and may correct beta blocker induced sleep disturbance.
Melatonin increases the effect of blood thinner drugs and should be taken under supervision ( specially if your husband is taking any of the following- Enoxaperin, Warferin, riveroxaban, Apixaban etc.)
Kindly personally consult with your cardiologist regarding same.
Hope to have been Helpful.
Kind Regards Dr. Navneet Bansal
