Suggest Treatment For Indigestion And General Malaise In An Elderly Person

My husband, 70 years old, diabetic, always been strong, has one stent placed last year. Has upset stomach, general malaise, is sleeping on the couch right now. Outside temperature is about 100. He has not been outside for about an hour. Do I insist that he go to the emergency room? Has 1 kidney, no spleen.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since your husband has an upset stomach and indigestion, give him anti-diarrhea medicines (loperamide or bismuth subsalisylate).

General malaise is because he is dehydrated. Keep him well hydrated. Give ORS, soups, juice and semi-solid food like oats & porridge in small amounts multiple times. He should respond & get better.

But if there is no improvement he should visit ER & get physically examined. Get CBC, Liver function tests, Urinalysis & stool examination done. He needs medical support, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, antacids, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
