Suggest Treatment For Increase In Blood Glucose Level While On Gemfibrozil

I have been on gemfibrozil 600 mg. 2 x day for about 6 years and have noticed an increase in my blood glucose level. I am not over weight, do not drink alcohol or use tobacco products. I exercise about 1 hour a day, 5 days a week. I am also on atorvastatin 10 mg 1 x day. Can either of these drugs or the combination of the 2 cause an increase in blood glucose level?

Diabetologist 's  Response
Atorvastatin can rarely cause new onset diabetes mellitus and increase the blood glucose levels. But this is a very rare side effect of long term use of statins. Gemfibrozil usually does not have this side effect.
I would recommend you to undergo investigations to determine your glycemic status that includes HbA1c measurements. As diabetes has many risk factors, even if the results are confirming of diabetes; it is difficult to pinpoint on atorvastatin. Medications may be initiated based on the test results. Please take the medications as prescribed by your physician.
Hope the above information helps you. Thanks.
