Hi,

The most common cause of menstrual irregularities in this age group in poly cystic ovaries (PCOS). If I were your treating physician I would have asked for a hormonal tests (Testosterone, Thyroid function tests, prolactin, LH, FSH) and an ultrasound abdomen. If investigations are suggestive of PCOS the preferred initial treatment is oral contraceptives.

If you don't want to start contraceptives, the second line treatment is metformin and weight reduction through diet and exercise.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
