Suggest Treatment For Hard Stool Post Hysterectomy

My daughter has been diagnosed with idiopathic gastroparesis about 7 months ago. She just had a laparoscopic hysterectomy 5 days ago. Of course she’s taking narcotic pain medication quite frequently right now. She has done very well except for the very small, hard stools since surgery. She’s in a lot of pain today. Will it be okay to start her on docudate 100mg?

Hello,

Causes of post-surgical constipation
1. Narcotic pain relievers, such as opioids, general anesthesia.
2. An inflammatory stimulus, such as trauma or infection.
3. An electrolyte, fluid, or glucose imbalance. Prolonged inactivity, changes to diet, especially insufficient fiber.
Try to avoid narcotic pain killers. After surgery, you should also plan to take a stool softener, such as docusate (Colace). A fiber laxative, such as psyllium (Metamucil), may also be helpful. Linaclotide (Linzess) or lubiprostone (Amitiza) are two drugs draw water into intestine lead to passing stools. Still not improved, you can use suppositories, they are useful. Please consult your treating doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
