Suggest Treatment For Growth In The Ureter And Blood In Urine

35 year old male in good health. Has high pain threshold and is rarely sick. Went to local urgent care with severe back pain. Was given Naproxen. No improvement so went back. Dr thought perhaps kidney stones so did c-scan. Discovered growth on ureter and urine test revealed blood in urine. Still has back pain and when he eats he has discomfort. Was referred to urologist - had appt today and Dr said he could do a procedure but it is invasive and if it was his son, we would not recommend it. Said pain was back pain and said he will have urology team look at for second opinion and walked out of room. Did not wait to hear other symptoms, did not discuss blood in urine or listen to family history (paternal grandfather had renal cancer and maternal uncle had kidney removed due to benign tumour. At a loss as what to do. Suffering with pain, has lot 13 lbs and is unable to eat enough. Can t work and has no short term or long term benefits. Concerned as to whether growth is dangerous and wondering about blood in urine and eating issues along with back pain. Has not yet had growth diagnosed and does not know where to turn. Any comments would be appreciated.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

In most cases, this is a sign of uroinfection or kidneys stones. This is mainly self-limiting and doesn't require any specific treatment and you should just be patient and have fluids to promote urination.

Less likely it may indicate possible bleeding in urethra, bladder or kidneys from a popped vessel or some other cause.

IF this continues you should do urine analysis, urinoculture and kidneys ultrasound to rule these main causes out.

You should drink raspberry tea and plenty of water till you do tests. Also, avoid sexual intercourse and have to keep good hygiene.

You should reduce salt in your diet as well since this could lead to increased risk of urinary stone formation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
