Suggest Treatment For Flank Pain While Having Urinary Tract Obstruction
Hi, My wife had a ureteral stent placed in her right ureter on July 13 for obstruction. She has stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and PET scan showed a growth outside the right ureter that is pressing on the base of the ureter causing inflammation in the ureter and hydonephrosis and limitation of flow through the ureter. She has had mild to moderate discomfort post-op in the right flank. The urologist did lab work pre-op and saw pus in the urine and prescribed Cipro for 1 week beginning 7/7 and completing on 7/13, the day of stent placement. He prescribed another 1 week of Cipro on 7/13 which was completed on 7/20. For about 3 days she has experienced periodic sharp pains in the bladder area. About 3 hours ago she began having pain in her left kidney area (opposite side to the stent) and then in her left flank. This pain continues and is severe enough she can barely move. She is lying very still in the bed because if she moves at all the pain becomes much more severe. She says she things she has a bladder infection and I tend to agree, but we wish to know if this is a valid possibility. She does not want to go to the Emergency Room, but I want to know if this can be dangerous to wait until tomorrow morning when the doctor is in the office.
Apply heat. Place a heating pad on your abdomen, back or side to ease pain. Use pain medicine. For fever or discomfort, take a non-aspirin pain reliever such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or Ibuprofen (Advil). Stay hydrated.
