Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i think my girlfriend might have a fecal impaction. she is stubborn and she doesn t want to go to the ER. I ve tried a variety of OTC meds that should have worked by now for the past 3 days. I ve given her stool softners/laxatives, miralax, apple juice, mineral oil. did yoga poses that should stimulate her intestines to go and made her drink extra amounts of water. she only informed me tonite since this relationship is only 1 mth old that she has gone up to 1 week without going. she is not taking this serious but I m worried that it could become life threatening for her. what should i do since i can t convince her to go to the ER?
Hi, The best thing is to take her to the ER as there is nothing more to do from your side. The treatment for impacted stools is to digitally evacuate. That is to remove the hardened stools using hand. This has to be done by the doctor as improperly done evacuation can lead to tear of the rectum. If the stools are impacted, it is not advisable to give any more laxatives or enema as it will cause increased pressure on the intestines and rupture. Please convince her to go to ER and have it removed before it becomes more painful
