Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was recently (yesterday) diagnosed with bronchitis and have been prescribed a Z-pak for 5 days (I took 2 yesterday, 1 today so far). I still have a dry cough that often occurs in spells. As a result my back under my right shoulder blade is hurting and today the pain has spread to my sternum and the left side of my chest underneath my breast. The doctor mentioned pleurisy and to take ibuprofen which I have done. However the pain is worsening and not getting better. I m beginning to get scared because the pain can be sudden and stabbing if I move the wrong way, take a deep breath, yawn, or cough. I have to go back to work on Tuesday - I have to get better!! Do I need to call my doctor back?
If the pain is very severe then you should go back to your doctor for reassessment. It would be best to be seen to make sure that it is pleurisy and there are no other issues that are contributing to the pain.
If the pain is not severe, then you may want to consider using an alternative anti inflammatory to see if you get a better reaction with another medication eg voltaren or naproxen.
I hope this helps

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic The pain can be due to pleurisy as you mentioned, this can occur in lung infection. If the pain is very severe then you should go back to your doctor for reassessment. It would be best to be seen to make sure that it is pleurisy and there are no other issues that are contributing to the pain.
