Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea, Constipation And Severe Bloating

my sister in law is having alot of stomach issues and the doctors are not being much help. She as gone to her doctor, the er and so forth. Now they want her to see a gastroenterologist. Her major stomach issues stated over a month ago and have gotten worse. First she had alot of pain and diahhrea, then constipation and severe bloating. She has not been able to eat anything and keep it down for more than two weeks. She also says she feels itchy all over, this started before the pain mediciine so it doesn t seem as though it would be an allergic reason. She has been prescribed pain mediation, nausia meds,About two years ago she had back surgury and that is also bothering her somwhat, so they have given her meds for that. She does have rods that were put into her back. She has had diverticulitis, her sugar is alevated now to almost a prediabetic level. She had an mri recently, not much result there. Can you think of anything she might be able to have them test for? I though about ulcerative colitis. This is really taken a toll on her and my brother who is trying to be there for her. She has been run around from one doctor to another and the stress from that is not helping her either.

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your sister's whole query and understand the concern.

Feeling extremely boated stomach with alternative diarrhea and constipation could be related to dyspepsia or acute gastritis or irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease but it needs further evaluation by clinical examination and various tests to have confirmed diagnosis.

If her symptoms are not so troublesome then I can suggest some medications and dietary precautions to get relieved from itching all over, pain, constipation and stomach bloating.

1) Proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole 40 or rabeprazole 20) twice daily.

2) Give antihistamines like levo-cetrizine 10 mg twice daily from the relief of itching.

3) Syrup digene 2 TSF three times a day if there is acidity or discomfort.

All above drugs are available as OTC drugs.

4) Avoid hot, oily and spicy foods rather take bland diet for initial 2 to 3 days
5) Avoid eating full stomach one at a time rather take small and frequent meals.
6) Have soft diet only for next 2 to 3 days
7) Take salads (cucumber, cabbage, carrot, beat) in the meal, more take vegetables
8) Walk slowly after every meal but do not walk fast.
Avoid taking rest immediately after meal.
9) Take stool softener or laxatives like syrup cremaffin plus 3TSF at a bed time.

I expect that she will start to get better within 3 to 5 days but if your problem persists then i will advice you to see physician or gastro physician who can order various tests (below mentioned) and can come to a particular diagnosis and start the treatment.

1) routine blood investigations,
2) liver function tests,
3) urine and stool examination for R/M and ova
4) ultrasound of abdomen.

Here,MRI scan will not going to help her much when there is stomach and bowel symptoms.

Hope this will help you to get better.

Regards,
