Suggest Treatment For Constant Vivid Nightmares While Having Bipolar Disorder

Yes thank you very much. I have been diagnosed with bipolar. I am working with a Nurse Practitioner of my hospital s mental health outpatient clinic. On May 10, 2016 I was prescribed 250 mgs of Depakote-take one tablet at bedtime for 4 days then increase to 2 tablets. My next apt with her on June 8 she has me now on 3 tablets of 250 mgs for a total of 750 mgs at bedtime. On June 8 she now has me on olanzapine 5 mgs one tablet at bedtime I also take loratadine 10 mgs one tablet at bedeetime. Everything was working fine until by general doctor prescribed 50,000 mgs of Vitamin D. This afternoon I woke from a nap with a rash on my legs - left leg big rash between ankle and knee cap - right leg a little bit of rash by ankle. Also rash is starting on my right arm. I had breast cancer treatment in 2014. Had chemo and radiation treatment march through September 2015. I had a left beast lumpectomy done in 2014. I have also been diagnosed with COPD. I had an allergic reaction to the nebulizer treatment and symbicort. Tongue and back of my throat swelled. Then last week I had a viral respiratory viral infection I had gone to the Emergency Room. I also have I believe seasonal allergies which I believe is why my general doctor prescribed loratadine for me at 10 mgs at bedtime. Do I continue the 3 Depakote (750 Mgs) and the Olanzapine 5 mg (and do I chew it or swallow it whole)?? Also I do like taking these 3 meds at night as they help me sleep. I was also prescribed Trazedone (50 mgs) at bedtime but I choose not to take it as I have vivid nightmares or dreams My nurse practitioner knows this. Thank you for your advice. Sorry it took me so long to write this.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As a nurse practitioner , you know very well the importance of
prescribed medicines in recommended dosages for control of bipolar
disorder.

Now as there are pros and cons of every medicine, certain control will give side effect of vivid dreams and you have to choose among those with least side effects and partial control of bipolar symptoms.

I would request you to opt for meditations and YOGA which will help you to combat the nightmare issues with medications to some extent as well.

Wish you best recovery and health.
Thanks.
