Suggest Treatment For Chronic Diarrhea

I have had ongoing chronic diarrhea for 35 years or so. It started not too long after surgery for a hysterectomy. Not long after the surgery, I had surgery for kidney stones. Apparently the stones were loosened during the first surgery. This was in 1979. I am currently taking 4 lomotil/day and taking these 2 in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m. I was started on those pills three years ago and for a while that did keep it mostly under control. But now, it is again just chronic diarrhea and cannot eat w/o heading for the commode. I take about 3 showers/day to keep clean and using pads, diapers, I cannot tell you the embarrassment. My Dr. just put me on a drug called Colestipol. I have not received the drug yet. At this point, I don t believe anything or anyone can help and I am praying for death.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

As per your history and symptoms most likely you are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome is a rather common intestinal tract disease which is characterized by stomach gas, diarrhea or constipation for months. It is a chronic condition whose exact cause, although unknown, is sometimes attributed to the dysfunctional production of the neurotransmitter, dopamine. Initially, I would suggest you go for stool microscopy test. If the test is negative for bacteria or protozoa (gastroenteritis chronic) then it is irritable bowel disease.

Suggestions are:
Start taking a probiotic, Probiotics contains lactobacillus. These are good bacteria's help in proper digestion of food and will help to revive your depleted gastric flora. Gut flora is the complex community of microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of humans.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
