General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
If you have chest congestion and shortness of breath the first thing to think is asthma or reactive ariways. If treatment prescribed helped you during the time you were on treatment than it proves it. A good way to diagnose it for sure is spirometry- a test for lung function and finds causes of shortness of breath. If you stopped the treatment and got worse this is because you might need to continue it longer and also add some steroid inhalers twice a day to protect you for a longer time. Taking the drugs with a spacer increases the effectivity so is recommended. You might need to take the inhaled steroids twice a day and use of duolin as needed and if no symptoms for a few weeks you can try to step down the treatment, do not try to rush into stopping treatment as this might bring a severe crisis of shortness of breath.
So- 1. have a spirometry done. 2. Speak with your provider on the need for steroid inhalers 3. take duolin as needed and do not stop them quickly.
4. if no improvement or any worsening you will need to ask for urgent medical care.5. if you are smoking, quitting it is vital.
Hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you.
