Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 42 year old, 10 year breast cancer survivor (no chemo or radiation required) and also a pancreas and kidney transplant recipient. I had and MRI for chronic hip pain which revealed cam-type impingement, mild to moderate gluteus minimus tendonitis and peritendonitis and fraying or portions of the anterosuperior labrum. No fracture or avn. The findings also state mildly heterogeneous red marrow reconversion with a nodular focus of reconversion in the subtrochanteric femur . Is this a purely benign finding or any concern? Thank you.
Cam impingement is a sub-type of femoroacetabular impingement. Basically, it's a mechanical problem that will lead to chronic damage if unattended. There are two ways to tackle the issue. First, you could start on a physiotherapy program. These must be at least three months long. In this case, it is expected that about 50% of the patients will improve their symptoms.
On the other side, you could choose to go for a hip arthroscopy. In this procedure, the cam lesion will be resected, and the frayed labrum will be repaired. Evidence suggest that you'll find an overall better improvement with a hip arthroscopy compared to physiotherapy. But the truth is, the decision relies heavily on your call. Talk to your orthopedic surgeon and look for the best treatment that suits your needs.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
